Ballet Arizona dancer Colleen Hoopes was killed in her Tempe home. Her family celebrates her life and has established a scholarship in her name.

"She had such a light, too," Deb Buckley said about her daughter, Colleen Hoopes, who was killed on May 20.

But amid their pain, her family is honoring her legacy. They have established the Colleen Buckley Scholarship at the Draper Center for Dance Education. The scholarship will support young dancers who, like Colleen, dream of being professional ballet dancers, her parents said. Hoopes could read before she could dance. A book inspired her to pursue dance, Deb Buckley said. When Hoopes read the story “Ballerina Girl,” she had only one thing to say:"I want to be a ballerina girl." So began Colleen’s ballerina career. In middle school, Hoopes started intensive training at the Draper Center, where the scholarship in her name will be administered. For six days each week, Hoopes trained.

She danced in numerous Ballet Arizona productions, including Ib Andersen's"Swan Lake,""Sleeping Beauty,""The Nutcracker,""Cinderella" and"Eroica." “And she told me, ‘You’re absolutely correct,’ and handed me a flower which she said was my fairy phone,” Michaela said.
