Zaidi said the Giants’ past 3 weeks has ‘obviously been disappointing’ but isn’t ready to commit to selling (or buying) at the Aug. 2 trade deadline.
SAN FRANCISCO — Last month, Farhan Zaidi looked at the Giants’ record and was overcome with a sense of optimism. They were 10 games over .500 and, the president of baseball operations thought, still had their best baseball in front of them.
Since climbing a season-high 10 games over .500 on June 18, the Giants have lost 15 of their past 21 entering Tuesday night. Now a game over .500, on the outside of the playoff picture, the recent skid has complicated the club’s deadline plans. “There’s a lot that can happen in the next three weeks,” Zaidi said. “I think it’s possible we see a dramatic shift one way or the other. If we’re in and around the same position, either in or just outside the playoff picture, we’re definitely going to look to improve. … Any time you’re in a position – and I consider us to be in a position to make the playoffs this year – you’re going to want to push some chips in.
Despite fielding the majors’ oldest and possibly least athletic roster, Zaidi believes the Giants haven’t played up to their capabilities defensively. Most metrics rate them among the majors’ worst defensive teams.
