he historic four-mile trail that runs through Third Ward appears to be nothing more than a concrete path. There are few identifying signs, and no historical markers or monuments.
Some residents tried to get officials to help, but ultimately they had to clean it up themselves. One resident even constructed a beautiful garden to honor AIDs victims — friends he lost. But by 2014, the city bulldozed over it and paved a concrete trail for cyclists and joggers to pass through the neighborhood.The Columbia Tap Bike Trail, which travels through Third Ward, holds a deep history.

The trail was constructed on a former rail line, originally built by slaves, that moved cotton and sugar. “People don’t even know the history of Texas, they think they do,” Carrier said. “Even in 2023, there’s an imbalance between who is benefitting from this trail to who is being harmed by it.
