💧 The analysis shows that 7.6 million cubic metres of water containing sewage was discharged from works located inside or close to such sites in 2022 – the equivalent of more than 3,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools 🔴 ChrisGreenNews reports

The Liberal Democrats are calling for the Scottish Government to dramatically upgrade monitoring so all overflow points are covered and more accurate figures can be published.

“What’s more, this is almost certainly a significant understatement, because fewer than 1 in 20 discharge pipes are actually monitored.“The first step will be to get a handle on the scale of the problem. Humza Yousaf needs to give a commitment that Scottish Water will record and publish details on every sewage dump, not just the limited numbers that are currently recorded.”

“The data highlights examples of storm overflows occurring when there was major heavy rainfall events in parts of Scotland – for example, 30 December 2022 when there was widespread flooding. It added that sewage works operated by Scottish Water “have not been identified as an issue causing environmental impact” on SPAs, but that it did not hold data on SSSIs.
