is firmly settled on pop. The teasers might have anticipated something more somber and ominous but, at least sonically, a big part of the album still falls on the more palatable and easy-to-digest side.
. A heady closer for the album, “Ash” is roguish, free, and unapologetic. It’s easy to cede to the saccharine lure of autotune and overdo it. But, when you get it right it feelsright. "Ash” hits that sweet spot. Though it might not sound like it, the track is actually minimal in composition, mixing enthralling trap trills and hip hop elements to sing about a Phoenix-like metamorphosis. “To the sun, to the moon. Another world, blaze up anew,” Vernon raps in the song’s second verse.
