Merritt scored a brace in a span of about seven minutes in the second half and the Spartans defeated Dripping Springs 2-1 in the UIL Class 6A championship game. Meanwhile, Dripping Springs had been clicking at the right time since collecting two triumphs in its first 10 games. The Tigers placed fourth in District 26-6A before outscoring their first five playoff opponents 13-7 under coach Josh Hill. They won eight straight elimination games to reach the title game.
The teams played to a 0-0 draw at halftime. Seven Lakes had eight shots to Dripping Springs’ four in the first half, but none found the back of the net. Junior forward Noa Static had three of those attempts and Merritt threatened with his strike off a free kick before senior goalkeeper Lucas Perez made one of six saves.
