The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die fixed The Last Kingdom season 5's Aethelstan problem, and probably saved the movie in the process.

The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die has fully solved The Last Kingdom's Aethelstan problem. Seven Kings Must Die is the purported end of The Last Kingdom's story - however, the potential for spinoffs is certainly there. The Last Kingdom's cast is outstanding, and there are plenty of characters Netflix could attempt to bring back for a spinoff series or film, including Aethelstan.

Seven Kings Must Die was an essential addition to The Last Kingdom's story because the intent of the story was always to reach the famous Battle of Brunanburh and subsequent unification of England. For that to happen, Aethelstan, who is known to history as medieval England's first and greatest king, needed to become a central part of the story. There was some trepidation among fans coming into this film that Aethelstan was too much of a two-dimensional character to pull that off.

Namely, the reveal that Aethelstan is gay added a critical level of depth to his character by creating a difficult conflict between Aethelstan's sexuality and his religious beliefs, which changes the way he thinks about his duty as king and affects his trust for Uhtred.

This is also what drives Aethelstan into conflict where he otherwise would not have sought it. He is convinced by Ingilmundr that conquest and the spread of Christianity are the only ways to atone for being gay. This creates a strong level of empathy for Aethelstan, who is tortured by his belief that his sexuality is somehow sinful.
