At ONEgeneration in Reseda, table seating is limited to three due to coronavirus, but seniors relish the conversation and camaraderie during free lunches (or $3 for those who can pay).
It’s 15 minutes until lunch is served in the dining room, and Richard Roberts, 75, is looking around the lobby of the ONEgeneration Senior Enrichment Center in Reseda to see which ladies he’s going to sit with today to have a nice conversation.
They thought it would be for only a few months, not a few years. It gets lonely when you don’t have anyone to socialize with, when your spouse is gone, and your oldest friends aren’t around anymore to have lunch with and catch up. “What are we having today?” John Garr, 94, asks Mimi Feigenson, the most important lady in the dining room. She doles out the meals.“We’ll get some seniors coming in, asking how much it costs?” Mimi says. “Nothing, it’s free, but a $3 donation is suggested. They’ll start to leave, apologizing because they don’t have the $3 on them. That’s okay, I tell them. You’re welcome to come in. It’s free.”
“You should have been here yesterday,” says Kay Schindler, a retired preschool teacher, checking in the seniors at the registration desk with Angela DiVenere on Thursday.
