State Sen. Ron Rice has served in the New Jersey Legislature since 1986, representing Newark and surrounding areas.

, the longest-serving Black lawmaker in New Jersey history and long one of the state’s most outspoken legislators and advocates for social justice, announced Friday he will retire at the end of the month after 35 years in the state Legislature.

The 76-year-old Democrat, a former Newark police officer who has represented portions of the state’s largest city and other parts of Essex County, confirmed to NJ Advance Media he sent a letter to his colleagues informing them of the decision.
