Sen. Mark Kelly wants to expedite pilot training on F-16 fighter jets and Amb. Cindy McCain wants safe passage of grain to Africa.
Both Arizonans joined an American political delegation inspecting conditions in Zambia, which is feeling squeezed by China as well.America needs to quickly help Ukrainian combat pilots train on U.S.-built F-16s to help in their war with Russia, Sen. Mark Kelly said Monday after the yearlong conflict again dominated concerns at a German security conference last week.
President Joe Biden has so far refused to commit to providing F-16s to Ukraine, but the issue has gained bipartisan support from members of Congress urging the White House to do so. The 200 requested jets could potentially tip control of the skies in Ukraine and change the tenor of other air strike capabilities for the Ukrainians.
The temporary deal was extended in November and is set to expire in March. Moscow has indicated it wants relief from some economic sanctions if it is to allow Ukrainian exports to flow beyond the current deal. The delegation met with Zambia’s foreign minister and visited a school to see firsthand the needs and effects of U.N. food-related programs in the country. Among those on hand, were Sens. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee; Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and Martin Heinrich, D-N.M.Western officials have been working with Zambian growers to modernize their farming capacity, Kelly said. U.S. farming is 10 times more productive, he said.

Congress floats ways to secure skies after Chinese balloonAs the only current U.S. senator to have visited space, Mark Kelly knows something about unexplained objects in the skies. Back in his aviator days, Kelly saw Mylar party balloons fly by his cockpit. “I don’t think we want to get into the business of launching AIM-9Xs — at $400,000 a pop — at weather balloons,” Kelly told The Associated Press, referring to the heat-seeking, air-to-air missiles used in recent weeks to shoot down a series of aerial objects, including a suspected Chinese surveillance balloon.
