Selma officials prepare to sell bonds to help pay for public safety equipment

The Selma City Council is going to have to wait to sell bonds to help fund the city’s new public safety training facility and fire department ladder truck.

“We got word from our financial advisors that … potential bond purchasers right now are unwilling to hold their bids over the weekend,” Casias said. “Bond markets are closed Friday and given the significant global volatility in the market, basically that weekend is not working to our advantage.” “We have to have a super majority, meaning only one council member can be absent, to be able to have that special meeting,” Casias added.

With construction on the University Hospital Systems’ new hospital structure in the city, Casias said obtaining the aerial fire apparatus is essential for public safety reasons. The turnaround time from order to arrival can be up to 18 months, he told council when it met last month. The city is still seeking a location for a public safety training facility for its police and fire departments.
