Hundreds of Ohio high school seniors are among the semifinalists in the 68th annual National Merit Scholarship Program and will compete for 7,250 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $28 million offered next spring.

Students are selected based on their scores in the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, taken as high school juniors. To qualify as a finalist, students and a high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application that includes the student’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received.
The 16,000 semifinalists nationwide represent less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors and include the highest-scoring entrants in each state.
