The Southeastern Conference announced disciplinary actions against four players stemming from Saturday's Tennessee-Florida skirmish.
Tennessee defensive lineman Omarr Norman-Lott, Florida tight end Dante Zanders and Gators’ offensive linemen Damien George Jr. and Micah Mazzccua will each miss the next half of their teams’ respective games for their “unsportsmanlike actions.”“The suspensions were determined after video review and consultation between the Southeastern Conference Office, the University of Florida and the University of Tennessee,” the SEC said in its statement released Monday afternoon.
The Gators beat then-No. 11 ranked Tennessee in Gainesville, Fla., which remained a house of horrors for the Volunteers — UT fell to Florida on the road for the 10th time in a row. With the Gators attempting to wind time down in its 29-16 win, a late timeout by UT coach Josh Heupel and rivalry tensions led to an explosive moment.
Mazzcua and Tennessee defensive back Kamal Hadden squared off after Florida quarterback Graham Mertz took a knee with less than 10 seconds remaining in the game as other players pushed and shoved each other. Mazzcua swung and missed Hadden while the Gators’ sideline poured onto the field to separate the teams. Hadden was not listed among the SEC’s suspensions.
George Jr. transferred to Billy Napier’s program after three seasons in Tuscaloosa. His lone start came in the 2021 Iron Bowl. George said in August he “loved” the similarities between Napier and Alabama head coach Nick Saban. He also said theThrough three weeks, No. 25 Florida is 2-1 with a loss to Utah. The No. 13 Tide is 2-1 and will start SEC play this weekend against Ole Miss.
