Throughout March, Elliott, now in his 22nd season as the Spurs’ lead TV analyst, is tirelessly making the media rounds to tell his story to raise awareness about kidney disease during National Kidney Month.

After going through testing, doctors diagnosed him with focal segmental glomerular sclerosis, a type of kidney disease that causes scarring on the kidneys and inhibits their ability to filter excess fluids, waste and toxins from the blood. “He kept that he had kidney disease to himself, so when I found out was right after the Spurs won the NBA championship,” Noel said. “I was at work, and he called said he had kidney disease, was going through kidney failure and needed a donor, and I just said, ‘When and where.’ ”
“But after donating, my brother has had three kids, is healthy, obviously alive and doing well. You would never know he has one kidney.” Elliott, 55, can rattle off those statistics easily, but there was a time when he knew nothing about kidney disease. “There is a huge lack of awareness,” Saigal said. “If celebrities like Sean Elliott and other high-profile people talk about how their kidney disease was diagnosed and treated hopefully more people will know they have the problem so they can get some counsel, some help, some treatment to halt the progression. If detected early, the chances are, especially in the last few years when we have gained some really good tools and really good medications, that the progression will be slowed big-time.
