The Gulf Coast is getting hit with a one-two punch: The land is sinking at the same time that the water is rising. “Some of the highest projections in the world of sea level rise are in the Gulf Coast,” says Ben Hamlington, a research scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and one of the two dozen authors of the new report. “That's heavily affected by subsidence, so that's the primary driver there.
In Galveston in particular, the land has been collapsing at an astonishing rate. “The numbers I'm going to give you are going to be hard to believe, but there's an area in Baytown, where there's a big Exxon Mobil industrial plant, that sank about 11 feet in a period of 50 or 60 years, because they were just unsustainably pulling water out of there,” says Bob Stokes, president of the Galveston Bay Foundation, a conservation nonprofit that wasn’t involved in the new report.
