More than 40,000 Network Rail workers will stage the first of three 24-hour strikes on Wednesday.
During those walkouts, ScotRail cancelled 90% of its services while cross-border services were also badly affected.
Services are also expected to be affected on the days after strike action due to the staggered reopening of signal boxes across the country. "Regrettably, this strike action by RMT members of Network Rail means that we will not be able to operate the vast majority of our services during the period of strike action. Customers should expect significant disruption to services on strike days, as well as the following day.
But the railway workers' union has also highlighted proposed changes to pension schemes, working practices, and what it says is insufficient general funding for the transport system.
