The man in his 20s was arrested under the Official Secrets Act amid allegations of spying on behalf of Beijing while working at the House of Commons.
A Scot is at the centre of a Chinese spy scandal after being arrested while working as a researcher at Westminster.
Speculation is mounting that MPs could use parliamentary privilege to name him this week. The Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command, which oversees espionage-related offences, is investigating after the Scot and another man were arrested. There was a Skoda in the driveway and it is believed a house-sitter was present. He is not the registered owner of the house. One local said he had not seen the suspect “in some time”.
Li Qiang, second in status only to president Xi Jinping, is understood to have said the two leaders had “differences in opinion” during the conversation, which also touched on Ukraine and trade. Tugendhat is said not to have had contact since before he became security minister in September last year.
