Unleashing the power of marine algae: scientists uncover the secrets behind algae's ability to produce oxygen and support entire ecosystems.
Researchers at the University of California, Riverside, have discovered a gene that allows marine algae to synthesize chlorophyll, a crucial chemical for photosynthesis.food production and agricultural productivity on less land – all thanks to understanding the molecular pathways that marine algae use to survive.
“Despite their global significance, we did not understand the genetic basis for the algae’s survival, until now,” Xiang added. As per the release, a tobacco plant incorporated the marine algae gene. This lets the land plant “absorb a fuller spectrum of light and achieve better growth.”“Chlorophylls b and c absorb light at different wavelengths. The ocean absorbs red light, which is why it looks blue.
“Discovering the chlorophyll c gene was not the initial goal of our work. We made the mutants for another reason, but I guess we were just lucky,” Xiang said. The team hopes these genetic insights into chlorophyll c production could address two critical environmental challenges: coral bleaching and climate change adaptation.

Scientists use blue-green algae as a surrogate mother for 'meat-like' proteinsResearchers have not only succeeded in using blue-green algae as a surrogate mother for a new protein -- they have even coaxed the microalgae to produce 'meat fiber-like' protein strands. The achievement may be the key to sustainable foods that have both the 'right' texture and require minimal processing.
