The then-chief of the school district police, Pedro"Pete" Arredondo was widely condemned — and ultimately fired — for failing to act promptly to storm the classroom where the shooter was holed up with his victims, some of whom were wounded but alive. "I’m not going to say anything bad about the mom because it appears that we had a parent in distress," he said. He added that the officer was"there to prevent exactly what the parent wanted to do" — enter a school without making an appointment or signing in and showing ID. Traffickers transporting migrants and drugs from the border towns of Del Rio and Eagle Pass use U.S. 90 and U.S. 83, two highways that intersect near Uvalde.
