It’s not just the prints, though. You need to be thoughtfully nitpicky about every detail when it comes to a home renovation.
This was a very small issue in a massive home renovation project we began in March, to finish our attic into a bed-and-bath suite, complete with a fireplace. We added on to the second and third stories, to create a second-floor laundry room. And we knocked out a wall in our kitchen to add a 10-foot glass sliding door., from making sure we get a patio light reinstalled to nagging for clips that allow us to close vents in existing bedrooms.
I noticed the closet door swing only when I began the Tetris-like conundrum of trying to fit all my clothes into my closet. Eight-foot-square never felt so small. I was appalled. Why would anyone build a closet door to swing into the closet, thereby eliminating the usefulness of space behind the door?
I asked this at the same time as I asked when the siding would come, when the radiator would be installed and why they put can lights in our dormers when I had said all along I wanted pendants “Wait, wait, wait,” I said. Why did I have to pay for the mistake? They didn’t ask which way I wanted the door.I pulled up the prints on an app called Buildertrend, which my contractors use to communicate, store documents, send bills, approve selections and ask for change orders. There were several sets of prints, showing the design iterations through the city design review board. Originally, the plans called for a pocket door, back before the board required a big window in the bathroom.
