The province last week announced it would fund new emergency shelter beds in Saskatoon, now it's asking the city to help find locations.
City of Saskatoon staff will try to find two sites to house about 30 emergency shelter beds each in Saskatoon, after a request from the province.to address homelessness and mental health announced last week by the provincial government, including the provision of new shelter spaces in Saskatoon and Regina.City manager Jeff Jorgenson outlined a proposed process during Wednesday’s meeting of city council’s governance and priorities committee.
He said city staff will hold information sessions for residents around proposed locations, once they were identified. Jorgenson said the city is committing to this “atypical” process despite information sessions not usually being required unless a property is to be re-zoned for a shelter. Ward 3 Coun. David Kirton, whose ward includes the STC facility, asked if council would get a vote to approve the site selections. Jorgenson noted that emergency shelters remain a permitted use in areas with appropriate zoning. As such, he said, city council would not get final approval.
