After nearly 10 months of negotiations that ultimately did not lead to the multiyear contract he was seeking, Barkley was back with the Giants, back on the field, doing his thing.
The Giants made three offers to Barkley — one at the bye week last November, one after the 2022 season and one last week as the deadline came and went to sign a player on a franchise tag to a multiyear extension.
“There’s a personal side, of course,’’ Schoen said. “You get to know these guys throughout a season. They go to work every day. They work hard for you. That is part of it. There’s a human element to it. In this situation, we weren’t able to come to an agreement and that’s OK. I’ve been in this for 23 years and sometimes deals get done, and sometimes they don’t.’’
At the end of practice, Barkley and safety Xavier McKinney engaged in a familiar debate: Who won the day? Barkley, of course, said the offense had the upper hand.
