Nearly 200 activists and residents say a new cleanup agreement at Santa Susana Field Lab will put the health of families at risk in Simi and San Fernando valleys.
The entrance to the Boeing, Santa Susana Field Lab, high in the hills separating Simi Valley and the San Fernando Valley on Monday, May 9, 2022. Officials with a regional water board in recent days praised a new agreement that would provide safeguards for the environment and communities that live near the polluted Santa Susana Field Laboratory tucked in the hills in Simi and San Fernando valleys.
But residents and activists said the board ignored their pleas for more stringent rules and voted in support of the memorandum despite calls from nearly 200 activists and residents who urged the board to vote against it, arguing that the new agreement would put the health of local families at risk. Between 1947 and 2006, NASA, the Department of Energy, Boeing and its predecessors used the site for the assembly and testing of rocket engines. Years of industrial activity left the area polluted with chemicals and radionuclides dangerous to human health.
Boeing spokesman Connor Greenwood wrote in an email that the company supports the water board’s approval of the memorandum. Melissa Bumstead, founder of Parents Against Santa Susana Field Lab and a West Hills resident, was among a group of residents who attended the board’s meeting, holding signs that read “DTSC lies,” and “Boeing Corporation no toxic dump in our community.”

Q&A: Johannesburg has been hit by severe water shortages—new plan to manage the crisis isn't the answerJohannesburg and its surrounds, at the center of the industrial heartland of South Africa, have been hit by severe water cuts. Water interruptions have been happening for years, but they have been scaled up dramatically in recent weeks. The deteriorating situation recently forced the Minister of Water and Sanitation, Senzo Mchunu, to intervene. On 27 September he announced a new initiative—'water-shifting'. The proposal has echoes of 'load-shedding,' the term used for the planned power outages which have become a common feature of life for all South Africans. Anja du Plessis, a water management expert, explains the new water initiative.

Reprieve for New Orleans as salt water creeping up the Mississippi River slows its march inlandSalt water inching up the Mississippi River is progressing more slowly than once projected — buying time for water systems in metropolitan New Orleans that draw drinking water from the river. Officials said at a news conference in New Orleans on Thursday that an underwater sill downriver has helped impede the flow of heavy salt water crawling upriver. River flow forecasts are also better than expected. It means intakes in New Orleans and neighboring Jefferson Parish won't see the arrival until late November, instead of later this month. For smaller communities farther downriver, efforts continue to barge large amounts of fresh water to water system intakes.
