Her big salary and public clashes with 49ers over Levi’s Stadium management made her a controversial figure
SANTA CLARA — Santa Clara’s elected leaders have decided to fire City Manager Deanna Santana, whose big salary and public disputes with the 49ers over the operation of Levi’s Stadium have made her five-year run at the city’s helm a controversial one.
Gillmor, a close ally of Santana’s, criticized the council majority for putting the city in a “precarious situation.” With Doyle’s replacement yet to be named, Santa Clara is without its top two administrators or anyone serving in the interim. The council plans to meet in a week to appoint an interim acting city manager.
After the 30 days pass, the council can formally vote to oust her. In the meantime, Santana has been suspended with pay. Her compensation package to run the city of 130,000 has since increased, and in 2020 it topped out at $765,152. That made her the second-highest compensated city manager in California behind only the city manager of Fontana.
On Jan. 10, 24 and 31, Becker, Park and Jain together met with members of the 49ers’ front office staff to discuss topics including “Santana ethical concerns,” “Santana CEO title concerns,” “Santana email snooping concerns,” “Deanna’s luxury home” and “Deanna’s salary,” according to the council members’ public calendars.to a political action committee that backed Becker, Jain and Park.
