Stepping inside Sandi Burrows’s Upper East Side studio, every jewel tells a story–both figuratively and literally. A heart-shaped brooch reads “anger into action” while globe-shaped pins are splashed with “nothing matters more,” a direct reference to global climate change. Stacked bangles reading “resist” line a table with pink “smash the patriarchy” pendants and “civil rights are birthrights” medallions.
Passionate Protest pieces are designed to be layered up and worn with personality. Take, for example, how the designer herself wears multiple versions of the pendants as a charm necklace and also attaches them to her bags, for instance, which definitely garners curious stares on the subway, according to her.
Wearing a Passionate Protest piece undoubtedly draws attention, but according to Burrows, in times like these, that’s exactly the point of it all. “The fact that you go out like this every day and you’re just wearing it on your body, people comment on it,” she says. “They go, ‘Oh, I love your necklace.’ And I say, ‘But you have to see what the messages are.’ ” These are not pieces for the faint of heart–most don’t come in dainty sizes, but instead have been blown up in bigger proportions.
