The Prison Journalism Project trains inmates to be journalists and publishes their stories.

A nonprofit has received a grant benefiting people who are incarcerated and pursuing journalism, including writers at San Quentin State Prison.

The grant, which will be received in two equal installments, will be used to expand training offerings and fund the development of an outside newsroom to support prison journalists, said Yukari Kane, co-founder of the Prison Journalism Project. “There are more than 2 million people currently incarcerated in the United States, and yet most stories about prisons and the criminal justice system are written almost entirely with an outside perspective,” Kane said.

Last summer, the nonprofit launched a correspondence-based journalism course for incarcerated writers. The organization has published more than 1,200 stories from hundreds of writers in about 160 prisons across 35 states and Washington, D.C.“None of us were getting paid,” Kane said. “We work with a huge army of volunteer transcribers and editors to help us with this process. The first thing this allows us to do is … start paying our staff.
