Amourence Lee becomes first Jewish, Asian-American woman to become mayor of San Mateo, ending a week-long power struggle.
SAN MATEO — After a week of political turmoil that left the city without a mayor, a full five-member council voted unanimously Monday night to elect Amourence Lee as the city’s head — ending a tense power struggle that has divided the community.
While on Monday the council appeared poised to be similarly deadlocked on choosing a fifth colleague, council members came together to select Hedges, but not before Lee lodged several accusations of corruption, backroom dealings and extortion against those who attempted to sway her vote one way or another. Just before selecting Hedges, Lee abstained from voting, urging the council to return to the first item on the agenda: selecting a mayor.
