SAN JOSE — Flirting with an upset to an FCS school was not the showing San Jose State was hoping for in Thursday night’s season opener. Especially one in which head coach Brent Brennan concedes the Spartans got outplayed for much of their 21-17 comeback win over Portland State.

The Vikings took a 17-14 lead with 9:57 remaining in the game, but the Spartans held on with big stops on defense and a 19-yard punt return by Isaiah Hamilton that allowed SJSU to start the go-ahead drive from the Portland State 32-yard line with 2:25 remaining. None of that mattered when, on third and goal from the Portland State 2, Cordeiro, a transfer from Hawaii, put his head down and stumbled into the end zone while draped in green and white jerseys. Cordeiro had thrown incompletions on the previous two plays.
