San Diego man sentenced in armed robbery spree [Breaking]

A San Diego man who authorities say committed three armed robberies, including one where he fired a gun at a clerk, was sentenced Thursday to more than 20 years in federal prison.

Devon Dwayne Brooks, 23, who pleaded guilty in July to two counts of robbery, one count of attempted robbery and two counts of brandishing a firearm, received a 248-month prison term in San Diego federal court. According to his plea agreement, Brooks admitted to being armed with a gun when he held up three National City stores: Alpha and Omega Jewelry on March 26, 2019; Valerio’s Bakeshop on Dec. 30, 2019; and Winchell’s Donut House on Jan. 2, 2020.

At Winchell’s Donut House, Brooks used a revolver to demand money from the cashier, and when the clerk resisted, a struggle ensued, prosecutors said. Brooks took a step back, aimed his revolver and fired one shot. The shot missed the clerk, so Brooks then punched and pistol-whipped the clerk before fleeing empty-handed.
