Diana Fuentes says she's eager to modernize the pivotal job, calling the position crucial but not glamorous

San Diego has appointed the first Latina ever to the role of city clerk, a high-level position that includes overseeing city elections, organizing council agendas and managing records with a focus on transparency.

Her predecessor, Elizabeth Maland, was the first woman and held the job from 2005 to early this year. “The clerk’s office is the front door to City Council and city government for many people who show up here from all walks of life with all sorts of perspectives,” he said.His greatest success wasn’t surviving the shifting political leadership, but his service to the city of San Diego voters. “Your belief in me fills me with a profound sense of gratitude and responsibility,” she said. “I assure you I will strive every day to be worthy of the trust you have all placed in me.”“The role of the city clerk is not a glamorous one, but it is a crucial one,” she said. “I’m eager to modernize our processes while ensuring we continue to meet the needs of our citizens.”
