San Antonio’s 'sad boy singer' Dawson Wayne mixes it up on Monday with his take on Billie Eilish’s 'Copycat.'

Wayne, who described himself as a “sad boy singer,” previously had distinguished himself with sweet and tender vocals. He revealed a different side of himself Monday with his take onWayne said he wanted to show judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie that he was capable of doing something different — “I think I can show them I can do more than one thing,” he said — and they told him he had pulled it off.

“I locked in finally in that moment where you really controlled the room with your voice and then you went 'Psych,' and I was scared of you for the first time,” Perry said. “I was like, you’re such a nice guy, and all of the sudden I’m freaked out and I love it.”Bryan said he liked the gentler sound Wayne had showed off earlier in the competition but said he had given a solid performance. And Richie encouraged viewers to vote, “because this gentleman right here is amazing.

Wayne, a Reagan High School graduate whose given name is Dawson Rice, performed sixth out of the 13 singers spotlighted during the evening. It was the second night showcasing the Top 26 vocalists in the competition, and the first time that viewers have been given a chance to vote for their favorites.on the show’s app; or via text. To vote for Dawson, fans can text 19 to 21523.

After the voting, the field will be reduced from 26 to 20. Results will be announced in a three-hour installment Sunday on ABC and streamed on Hulu. Wayne and the other performers were coached by singer Noah Cyrus. She advised him to drop his vocals a bit when she noted that he was straining to hit some high notes.
