Maria Williams, owner of Eye of the Beholder Art Gallery, center, makes an altar with help from muralist, Joseph Ramey, left, sculptor, Hoi Ellis, second from left, and artist, Claudette Hopkins on Friday. Williams remembers her childhood when her mother observed Dia de los Muertos by building an altar in honor of their Cuban and Panamanian ancestors. After her mother’s death, Williams has continued the tradition, infusing the altars with symbols of her Afro-Latino heritage.

The meal will rest near a framed photo of Williams’ mother, who made the most of a life that was not promised. In October 1928, on a ship from Barbados off the coastline of Cuba, the midwife thought she was stillborn. They swaddled the baby in a blanket, ready to bury her at sea, until the midwife saw her move. Her parents named her Delorse, a variant of the Spanish word for pain.

San Antonio is known for having one of the biggest Day of the Dead celebrations, including festivals, SpiritLandia, a San Antonio River parade and community events.
