Samsung's Galaxy Fold is a remarkable phone that shows what future foldable devices will eventually be like, allowing you to unfold your phone into a tablet, but this $2,000 phone broke after two days of testing.

The Galaxy Fold is a $1,980 example of a new form factor that might get people to care about new phones again... eventually.

I've been using an early European version of the Galaxy Fold for the past several days, which is almost identical to what will be sold in the U.S. save for some of the radios inside. Here's what I learned. The Galaxy Fold is bulky. At first glance, it looks a bit like an old luxury clamshell phone with a hideaway keyboard, the kind you might have carried in the early 2000s.When closed, it looks like two phones stacked on top of one another. It has a small 4.

You can do a lot with the big screen, too, like run Google Maps, a browser and your music player all side-by-side at the same time. You can also open an app on the outside screen and continue using it on the big screen inside. This was useful for finding my position with Google Maps in New York City, although I had to stop walking and open the phone to use it.

During my second day of testing, the screen began flickering and would turn off and on at a rapid pace. It became completely unusable and at times wouldn't turn on at all. Separately, a few reviewers reported having removed the top layer of the display causing damage to the screen. The main display on the Galaxy Fold features a top protective layer, which is part of the display structure designed to protect the screen from unintended scratches. Removing the protective layer or adding adhesives to the main display may cause damage. We will ensure this information is clearly delivered to our customers.
