Moments after he had played a starring role in the biggest Samford basketball game in years, point guard Ques Glover climbed over the guardrail separating students from the court and locked his arms around fans.
It was the final home game of this season, but really it felt like just the beginning of something special for the school on the hill. Auburn and Alabama have elevated the status of their basketball programs over the last few years, but that’s only part of the story. A hoops revolution is reaching throughout Alabama at places like Jacksonville State , Troy , South Alabama and UAB .
The guy turned Mountain Brook High School into an unlikely basketball powerhouse, and McMillan has the pieces falling into place for another unprecedented ride at Samford. Doubt him now, but chances are you’ll be wanting him as your team’s coach in the future. Not only has McMillan built an overnight winner, but he did it during a pandemic and by using the shifting sands of collegiate athletics to his advantage.
“If I come here we’re going to grow,” said Glover on Wednesday, recalling the conversation. “To be honest, we didn’t expect to do it so fast. The ceiling is very high.”
