Rivera scores six points at regionals, but state berth eludes him

With the top two athletes advancing to state, Rivera bounced anywhere from second to sixth place through the opening two laps of the eight-lap race, but still in a super tight pack. He had to settle for fourth place with a 9:24.73, good for four of the six points Sam Rayburn collected at this weekend’s meet. Pearland Dawson’s Noah Haileab topped the field of 15 runners with a 9:08.05 and he’ll be joined at state in two weeks by Strake Jesuit’s Reese Vannerson, who was clocked at 9:09.33.
The only other Pasadena ISD or Deer Park athletes to compete for state honors was Memorial’s Taylor Mohn in the triple jump, Deer Park’s Terrance Smith in the triple jump as well as the long jump and Dobie’s Natalie Onozie in the girls’ long jump.
