ICYMI: Ryan Meili resigning as Sask. NDP Leader today
Meili announced his resignation at his constituency office in Saskatoon on Friday morning. He will be staying on as leader until then, at his decision.
Meili said the pandemic had played a role in his decision to step aside, though he believes the party needs a new voice, especially during what he called a period of “incredible growth and support from Democrats.” Meili, who won the party leadership in 2018 after two previous failed bids, was the NDP’s third leader since losing government to the Saskatchewan Party in 2007.
Prior to that, the only time the NDP has not held that seat since 1975 was longtime NDP MLA Buckley Belanger’s three-year stint as a Liberal from in 1995-1998 before crossing the floor. In a speech before a leadership review vote in October 2021 vote, Meili admitted that the party fell short of expectations in the last election campaign but promised to work with party supporters for change. He survived that vote,It echoed a sentiment he shared in a 2021 year-end interview with Postmedia, where Meiliwhen it came to “the degree to which people are frustrated with this government and are looking for change.
