The Rockies turned to Elehuris Montero out of necessity but had hopes he could develop into their everyday third baseman this season. That experiment is now on indefinite hold.
On Tuesday, ahead of its game against Pittsburgh, the Rockies moved second baseman Ryan McMahon back to third base and started Alan Trejo at second. Montero was benched and there is a possibility that he will soon be optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque in hopes that he can work on his defensive skills at third and first.
The athletic and rangy McMahon was a Gold Glove finalist at third in the previous two seasons and has played well at second base as well. As a group, however, Colorado’s defense has been poor and is part of the reason they entered Tuesday’s game with a 5-12 record and a six-game losing streak. Entering Tuesday’s game, the Rockies’ 14 errors were tied with Boston for the most in the majors.
Montero, who’s worked hard with infield coach Warren Schaeffer to improve his skills, had a tough game Monday in Colorado’s ugly 14-3 loss to the Pirates. He committed costly errors in the second and fourth innings and struck out twice. In many ways, he’s still a very raw infielder, committing three errors in 11 games for a .850 fielding percentage. He’s played some first base, too, but is still raw there as well.
Montero, who could eventually profile as a designated hitter and part-time first baseman, has a powerful bat, but there are holes in his swing. His slash line is a respectable .289/.333/.422 but he’s struck out a 33.3% clip this season after a 32.4% strikeout rate last season when he had 185 plate appearances in 53 games.
