Polls have closed and counting is underway at South Lanarkshire Council headquarters
Polls have closed in the battleground Rutherglen & Hamilton West by-election – and the keenly-anticipated count is now underway.
Voters in the constituency have been choosing a new MP in what is Scotland’s first-ever recall election, called after nearly 12,000 signed a petition to oust previous incumbent Margaret Ferrier over her 2020 Covid rule breaches. A record number of 14 candidates appeared on the ballot paper, with the seesaw seat being hotly contested between the SNP and Labour, between whom it has changed hands at each of the past three elections.
Ballot boxes are currently being transported from polling places across Rutherglen, Cambuslang, Blantyre, Earnock and Hillhouse to the count venue at South Lanarkshire Council’s headquarters in Hamilton. The result will be declared in the early hours of Friday morning, with Michael Shanks of Labour and Katy Loudon of the SNP the front runners to be declared as the constituency’s next MP.
