The jailed Putin critic Alexei Navalny has died in prison, according to Russian officials. Western leaders have condemned Vladimir Putin's regime and say the Russian president should be held accountable for the death.
While Alexei Navalny's death has been covered extensively outside of Russia, domestic audiences have been watching very different coverage. The loss of Vladimir Putin's fiercest critic and the country's de facto leader of the opposition was granted just seconds across TV networks in the country.President Putin himself failed to mention the incident during a busy day of TV appointments.
Journalist Francis Scarr, who monitors Russian TV for the BBC, laid out the sparse coverage in a series of posts on X.State TV presenter Olga Skabeyeva spent approximately 30 seconds covering Mr Navalny's death during the course of five hours of airtime, he reported. It took more than 40 minutes for news channel Russia 1 to mention the death, spending 35 seconds on the incident.NTV news saw the presenter read a report after 32 minutes.
