Russia withdrew a request to dock a warship in Malta for three days this month, BuzzFeed News can reveal.

This new incident, reported here for the first time, has raised concerns among senior US and European government officials that Moscow is looking to boost its military presence in Venezuela, and, at the same time, flex its muscles in the Mediterranean.

Malta initially asked Russia for additional information about the ship’s operations and itinerary, but has since been told by US officials that the vessel was en route to Venezuela, said senior Maltese government officials. Reports that Russian military planes are flying from Syria to Venezuela, via EU countries’ airspace, has raised alarms in the international community. The Kremlin is one of the main backers of Venezuela’s embattled president, Nicolás Maduro, after opposition leader Juan Guaidó

BuzzFeed News has agreed to withhold details of how the information was obtained by Malta’s security services in order to not expose their sources and methods. A senior government official described Russia’s diplomatic mission in Malta as disproportionately big given the country’s small size. The Maltese official also said that Russia was looking to extend westwards its influence across the Mediterranean, and was annoyed at Malta’s increasingly close security cooperation with the US.
