Gene Velasquez, a regular runner at Memorial Park, was searching for the good Samaritans...

Gene Velasquez is shown at Memorial Park Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2022, in Houston. He is a regular runner at the park, but these days, he is on a mission to find the good samaritan who saved his life. He was on a run over the summer when he had a heart attack, and someone gave him CPR and does not know who did it. He hopes that one day, his hero will recognize him and he will finally be able to say thank you.

“If that person didn’t do that, I wouldn’t be here now,” Velasquez said. “It’s crazy to think about.” “My heart just stopped,” Velasquez said. “They told me someone did CPR on me at the park and called the paramedics, who had a defibrillator and shocked me two times.” “You want to be able to save a life if you need to,” he said. “Remember, you cannot do CPR wrong. Don’t be afraid to try. The only way you can mess up is if you don’t try.”

An angiogram, or scan of his arteries, revealed the blockage, and a small stent was placed to correct the problem.“He made a beautiful recovery,” Bobrow said.“I would love to thank that person,” he said. “There are still good people out there who take a chance.” The officer discovered that Velasquez had no pulse. He flipped him over onto his back to see if his chest was rising. He began administering CPR — and continued for nine minutes. Then, Jack Perini took over.Another bystander called 911, and more were on the lookout, ready to direct EMS to the site. A group of women gathered and prayed, Perini recalled. He watched as the first responders placed the defibrillator paddles and delivered a first shock. A flatline appeared on the monitors.
