Liverpool new manager: the lowdown on Ruben Amorim as Anfield officials run rule over potential Jurgen Klopp replacement
If Jurgen Klopp's first press conference as Liverpool manager is best remembered for turning 'doubters to believers', those present at Ruben Amorim's Sporting unveiling recall a similarly famous turn of phrase.
Within two years of his 2020 arrival, Sporting were champions of Portugal for the first time in nearly two decades and the Verde e Brancos were reestablished as a club who could genuinely compete once more with Benfica and Porto, the two other giants of the Portuguese game. Liverpool will have to remunerate in similarly sizable terms if they are to prise him away from the Portuguese capital. The figure itself has been reported to stand at somewhere between £13m and £18m in recent days, which is still relatively modest given the going rate for those on the field in 2024.
"Ruben has his ideas and rules for the working group, but if someone isn't aligned with those there will be no problem," says Ricardo Sodre. "On the other hand Ruben won’t have a problem someone disrespecting his demands, even a fan favourite like Islam Slimani, who allegedly got sacked from Sporting after questioning Amorim's decisions. According to the allegations he thought he deserved to be in the main squad instead of Paulinho.
Ousmane Diomande, for example, was the subject of some eyebrow raising when Amorim brought him into the fold as a 19-year-old from Danish club Midtjylland after a loan spell at second division Portuguese side Mafra. Less than 18 months later, the Ivory Coast centre-back international has a slew of top clubs, including Liverpool, monitoring him. "He had the balls to play him," says one.
