The excitement of the discovery meant that Ross and the expert were determined to dig up the find, which required more strenuous effort than they had anticipated. Their masks filled up with more carbon dioxide than was safe, with Ross admitting: ‘Had we not been so excited we could have just flushed our masks and maybe got rid of the CO2.’
He explained: ‘I felt like I had a really bad headache and I felt out of it – like I’d had too much to drink. Once I got back out on the boat the headache went but your lungs feel like Christmas trees because it’s been starved of oxygen.
