When floats first became motorized, the creations were small by current standards. Some floats were built on the chassis of Model-T Fords, Andersen said, and were about 8 to 10 feet long and 4 to …

, it’s been a constant state of change for floats appearing in Pasadena’s Tournament of Roses Parade. They’ve gone from horse-drawn carts in 1890 to horseless carriages – beginning in 1920 with the 31st Rose Parade – to massive creations such as the, the parade’s longest float, which measured more than 125 feet front to back, weighed 137,000-plus pounds and featured eight dogs surfing in a 5,000-gallon water tank.

Each group with a float in the parade must follow a set of rules including one addressing commercialism. Self-built floats take as much creativity, time and effort as those built by professional float building companies, said Jon Reeves, who is both secretary of the Burbank Tournament of Roses Association board of directors and the organization’s construction chairman. The association is an all-volunteer group that creates the entry that represents Burbank in the parade. The volunteer group is regularly looking to produce a float that is better than the previous one.

She was hired to build it, “and it was probably at a considerable cost,” said Andersen, who added that the cost of designing and constructing a professionally built entry nowadays can range from $200,000 to $300,000.
