Utah QB Cam Rising was hurt in the second half as Penn State took control of the game
And Utah’s season ended, again, with dejection at the Rose Bowl.
In his final chapter, the Nittany Lions’ QB Steve Clifford wrote himself a happy ending. The sixth-year quarterback was 16 for 22 for 279 yards and two touchdowns to lead Penn State to its 11th victory this season, equaling the number the Nittany Lions won in the past two seasons combined. Then the gloom really began to set in for Utah. On the Utes’ next drive, Rising – who’d been pressured five times already in the second half, as many times as he had all of the first half – took off and ran into a thicket of Penn State defenders.
Bryson started once for Rising this season, against Washington State, but the sophomore was hard-pressed to replace the Ventura native Monday. Rising left having completed 8 of 21 passes for 95 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Bryson led Utah to a score with 25 seconds left and finished 10 for 19 for 112 yards, the touchdown and an interception.
That score got the white-clad Penn State supporters on the west end of the Rose Bowl stands hey-yo-ing and oh-oh-oh-ing some history: Penn State goes down as the first team in all the Rose Bowls to score multiple touchdowns from scrimmage of 80-plus yards.
