The Northern Irishman’s group walked on to the final tee with nine others players waiting to drive
Rory McIlroy reckons he survived a “s**tshow” to keep alive his hopes of being involved in the Wentworth weekend.
The Northern Irishman’s group, which also included Ludvig Aberg and Viktor Hovland, walked on to the final tee with nine others players waiting to drive. In gathering gloom at 7pm, there were actually five threeballs on the same hole and former Ryder Cup captain Thomas Bjorn had words with a drunk fan who was shouting during the chaos of the log-jam.
‘It’s a bit of a mad dash and a scramble to get finished. I don’t know what you could do about that apart from less players in the field.” Tommy Fleetwood, Shane Lowry and Sepp Straka all came directly behind McIlroy’s group and completed in darkness with the bright lights of the scoreboard above the final green providing the light for them to putt out. That trio safely made it through and, if McIlroy, Rose and Hojgaard get through on one-under, all 12 of Luke Donald’s Ryder Cup side will play the last two rounds.
