Rockets guard Kevin Porter Jr. returns after 20-game absence with toe injury
Rockets guard Kevin Porter Jr. was cleared to play Wednesday against the Memphis Grizzlies after a 20-game absence because of a toe injury.
The game will be his first since Jan. 11, when teammate Jae’Sean Tate was fouled in Sacramento and fell into Porter’s right foot. The foul was upgraded days later to a flagrant-1 but the injury would cost Porter a quarter of a season. Rockets coach Stephen Silas, who called Porter, “our 22-year-old vet,” said he would limit his playing time much as he did Jalen Green’s on Tuesday. Green, in his first game in nearly two weeks because of a groin injury,“He hasn’t played in a long time so there will definitely be some rust,” Silas said of the Rockets’ starting point guard. “But he has a way of playing that brings energy to our group. He brings talent to our group. I look forward to having him out there.
Porter is the Rockets’ second-leading scorer, averaging 19.2 points per game. His 5.6 assists per game lead the Rockets. “I want him to try to keep it simple, not try to do too much, not try to put up everything on his shoulders, as far as making every single play, or making every single shot or whatever,” Silas said. “I just want him to play and keep it as simple as possible.”
