While Robert Downey Jr. had his doubts about whether he could snag The Holiday’s lead role, Jimmy Fallon remembered thinking, “If Jack Black says no to this movie, I’m so in.”
The film, which has become something of a classic in the Christmas rom-com genre, centers on two women—movie-trailer maker Amanda and writer Iris —who trade homes and find love in their new environments during the holiday season. “We both got called in just as seat fillers, and we saw each other,” Downey said of his and Fallon’s auditions. “is definitely getting my part, but she needed someone to read with the gals”—“she,” presumably, being Meyers.
While Downey had his doubts about whether he could wrangle the role away from Law, Fallon remembered thinking, “If Jack Black says no to this movie, I’m so in. I’ll do it for half his price.” Unfortunately, their hopes of getting cast were soon crushed. “I was like, I’ve gotta have a better English accent than Jude Law at this point,” Downey joked.
Fallon, at least, was impressed by Downey’s tryout. “Honestly, I will tell you, by far, without a doubt…I’m sitting across from Robert Downey Jr., and I go, ‘This is the best actor I’ve ever sat across and did a scene with in my entire life. It was mind-blowing for me,” he said on the podcast. “I quit the business. I never went back. That was the last time I auditioned for a role.”host has spoken previously about his departure from the film industry.
