‘The atmosphere is like nothing else we’ve ever felt - it’s unreal'
Tension and nerves turned to joy and relief this afternoon as huddled together, holding hands and edging closer to the end of their seats, football fans across Manchester watched The Lionesses pull off a memorable victory.
Chants of ‘football’s coming home’ rang out as applause erupted and fans celebrated. For many, it took them back to the jubilant memory of England's Euro Cup win last year. “We’re so excited for the final. We’re going to win the world cup. We’ll be back here on Sunday - come on England! It’s coming home! We’re nervous but it’s such a momentous occasion and we can’t wait to watch the final - men can’t do what these incredible women are capable of,” Ellie added.
“Women’s football needs to be streamed across Manchester and shown everywhere - we hope to see more of a celebration on Sunday across town for the final.” The Lionesses have made it into the Women's World Cup final for the first time - and become the first England football team to reach that stage since the England men's 1966 triumph. Tyldesley's Ella Toone scored a sensational opener before it was cancelled out by Australia star Sam Kerr's solo strike.
“I thought it would be 2-1 to England so I’m so happy with the end result. It’s funny because the game is at 11am on a Wednesday when most people are working, but a lot of people have had their pints and prosecco in here so I think it’s made the crowd even more rowdy. Unfortunately, I’m off to work now and smell of beer, which isn’t great but I’m happy with the end result!”
