A section of County Road is currently closed while emergency services respond to the crash and police say it is not known how long the closure will be in place. Traffic is already running slow in the surrounding area and drivers may wish to find alternative routes.
According to those nearby, police and Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service are in attendance at the scene.A police spokesperson said: "Please be aware that Hayfield Road with the junction of County Road and Green Lane is currently closed following a road traffic collision. It is unclear how long the road will be closed for."
In an update, police clarified that only County Road was closed while Traffic monitoring service Inrix updated its own information after initially reporting that Hayfield Road was closed. It said: "A59 County Road in both directions blocked, queueing traffic due to accident between Yew Tree Road and A570 Southport Road."
The junction has long been a source of concern for residents, with multiple campaigns for increased safety measures in recent years. Cameras which check both speed and red light offences are due to be installed there under plans from Lancashire County Council.
